Lip Flip Guide for a Naturally Defined Smile

A lip flip can be one of the most understated ways to refine the appearance of the upper lip. Rather than adding volume, it uses carefully placed anti-wrinkle injections to relax the muscle around the mouth, allowing the top lip to roll gently outwards. The result can be a more visible lip line, a softer smile and greater balance between the upper and lower lip. This lip flip guide explains what the treatment can achieve, who it may suit and why a personalised clinical assessment matters.

What is a lip flip?

A lip flip is a prescription-only botulinum toxin treatment. Tiny doses are placed into the orbicularis oris muscle, which sits around the mouth. As the muscle relaxes, it curls the upper lip slightly upward and outward, revealing more of the pink part of the lip.

It is not the same as lip filler. Filler adds physical volume and structure by placing a gel beneath the skin. A lip flip changes how the muscle behaves. For clients who feel their upper lip disappears when they smile, or who want a little more definition without a fuller-looking lip, this distinction is often exactly what makes the treatment appealing.

The effect is subtle by design. It may enhance the lip’s outline and improve the balance of a smile, but it will not create the projection, shape change or hydration associated with filler. Honest expectations are essential: the best result looks like your lips, simply a little more visible and relaxed.

Lip flip guide: who is it designed for?

A lip flip may suit someone whose upper lip tucks inwards when smiling, whose lip border appears less defined, or who would like a lower-commitment introduction to injectable treatments. It can also be considered for some people who show more gum than they would like when smiling, although a gummy smile assessment needs particular care. The cause may involve the lips, teeth, gums or facial proportions, so treatment should never be assumed without a consultation.

It tends to work best where muscle activity is the main reason the upper lip appears narrow. If volume loss, asymmetry, lip length or skin quality is the primary concern, a different approach may be more suitable. In some cases, carefully planned filler or a combination treatment is considered. In others, no injectable treatment is the right answer.

A qualified prescriber should assess your medical history, current medicines, facial movement, lip anatomy and treatment goals before prescribing. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, certain neurological conditions, active infection around the treatment area, and a history of allergy or adverse reaction may mean treatment should be postponed or avoided. This is why a proper consultation is not an optional extra. It protects both your health and your result.

What happens during the appointment?

Your appointment should begin with a conversation, not a needle. A clinician will ask what you notice about your lips at rest and when smiling, what result you are hoping for, and whether you have had toxin or filler previously. Clear photographs may be taken for clinical records and to help assess the outcome at review.

The injections themselves are quick. After the skin is cleansed, very small amounts of product are administered with a fine needle at selected points above the upper lip. Most clients describe a brief pinching sensation. Numbing cream is rarely needed, but comfort should always be discussed if you feel anxious about injections.

The skill lies in precision and restraint. The muscles around the mouth are involved in speaking, eating, drinking and facial expression. A lip flip is not a treatment where more product produces a better result. Conservative dosing, appropriate placement and a clinician who understands facial anatomy are central to maintaining natural movement.

How long does a lip flip take to work?

You will not see the final result immediately. Early changes may begin after a few days, with the effect usually becoming clearer over 10 to 14 days. A review may be offered where clinically appropriate, particularly for first-time clients or when the desired result is very subtle.

Results commonly last around six to 10 weeks, though this varies with metabolism, dose, muscle strength and individual response. The treatment often wears off sooner than toxin placed in areas such as the forehead because the mouth is highly active throughout the day.

That shorter duration can be a benefit if you are exploring the treatment for the first time. It allows you to see how you feel about the change without committing to a longer-lasting enhancement. It also means maintenance appointments may be needed if you decide it suits you.

Lip flip versus lip filler

Choosing between a lip flip and lip filler is not about which treatment is better. It is about matching the method to the concern.

A lip flip is generally best for a gentle outward roll of the upper lip, a little more visible vermilion and a softened appearance when smiling. It does not add volume. Lip filler can create volume, refine the cupid’s bow, improve hydration and support lip shape, but it is a different procedure with its own risks, aftercare and suitability considerations.

Some clients choose a lip flip because they are concerned that filler may look obvious. When filler is selected and placed conservatively by an experienced medical practitioner, it can still look beautifully natural. Equally, a lip flip can look disappointing if it is used to solve a concern that requires structural support. Personalised treatment planning matters more than following a trend.

Risks and considerations to understand

All injectable treatments carry risk, even when performed well. Common short-term effects include small areas of redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising at injection points. These usually settle quickly.

Because the treatment affects a working muscle, temporary functional changes are also possible. You may notice that drinking through a straw, whistling, applying lipstick, enunciating certain words or controlling the upper lip feels different while the toxin is active. If too much product is used or it affects an unintended area, the lip can feel overly relaxed or the smile may look uneven. These effects are usually temporary, but they can be frustrating while they last.

A reputable practitioner will discuss recognised risks, ask about medical suitability and provide a clear plan for questions after treatment. Be cautious of heavily discounted offers, rushed appointments and anyone willing to inject without a face-to-face assessment. Your lips are highly expressive, and a safe, elegant result depends on clinical judgement rather than a one-size-fits-all technique.

Lip flip aftercare

Your clinician’s individual advice should always take priority. In general, avoid pressing, rubbing or massaging the treated area unless you have specifically been told to do so. Keep the area clean, avoid applying pressure from facial treatments immediately afterwards, and follow advice about exercise, alcohol and heat exposure for the rest of the day.

Try not to judge the outcome too soon. Mild redness or a tiny raised area at the injection site can occur straight after treatment, while the visible change develops gradually over the following fortnight. Contact your practitioner promptly if you have concerns about an unexpected reaction, pronounced asymmetry or changes that feel more significant than you were prepared for.

Choosing a practitioner you can trust

For a treatment this precise, credentials and consultation quality should guide your decision. Look for a medically qualified practitioner who can prescribe, understands the anatomy of the lower face and is prepared to say when a lip flip is not the right choice. You should feel listened to, never persuaded into a treatment that does not fit your goals.

At Evervine Medical Aesthetics, treatment planning is led by the principle that refreshed should still look like you. A considered consultation can establish whether a lip flip, another rejuvenation treatment or a skin-focused plan will give you the most confidence in your reflection.

The most satisfying lip flip is rarely the one other people immediately notice. It is the one that lets you smile, speak and feel like yourself, with a little more ease every time you catch your reflection.
